Women occupied a high place in Iroquois society.  They were revered for their wisdom and had important roles in society.  A clan mother can choose the chief of their tribe and have the power to remove them.  They can also vote to form or remove a council even they did not run them.  They also worked together with men which showed how high their status was in society.
